Is your mobile phone wreaking havoc on your skin?

We live in an age where we use our phones to stay constantly connected with society - whether it be through making phone calls or communicating via social media. However, have you ever stopped to think of the impact that this is having on the largest organ of our body - our skin?

Issue 1: Acne

It has been said a mobile phone can harbour more bacteria than a toilet seat! Bacteria is one of the main causes of acne which is why it's important to clean mobile phone screens regularly. Every time we make a call, we reintroduce these germs onto our skin, clogging our pores and leading to eventual breakouts. The next time you suffer a breakout, ask yourself which side of the face you tend to hold your phone against. If the breakout happens to be on the same side as your phone, there are a few steps that you can take to address the issue.

For example, using earphones or a headset rather than holding the phone will help. If you’re not on the move, then using your phone’s loudspeaker may even be appropriate. It’s not just bacteria which can cause an issue. The warmth of a phone together with the pressure against the skin can lead to a build up of oil and sweat thus leading to the perfect breeding ground for spots. In addition, makeup can become melted into the skin and wreak havoc.
An effective cleansing routine using the right products and the right techniques will help to treat these breakouts. In addition, regularly wiping down the phone and keeping your hands clean will also help to reduce bacterial growth.
It’s not just your mobile phone that may be the problem - the office phone can also harbour bacteria as it gets pressed up against the faces of your coworkers at various points during the day.
The ß-Active range from ENVIRON is a 5 step skin care programme formulated for consumers who have problematic skins and thus is the ideal product range to deal with such issues. The ß-Active range is recommended to be used in conjunction with the vitamin A moisturisers in the Skin Essentia AVST range. Most of the products in the ß-Active range contain a combination of Australian Tea Tree Oil, colostrum and salicylic acid.

Issue 2: Hyperpigmentation
Mobile phones emit 'blue light' and this is not thought to lead to DNA damage e.g. skin cancer. However, a recent study has shown that an increase in pigment production an lead to premature age spots and hyperpigmentation. For example, if you suffer from melasma, the heat generated by your phone can actually exacerbate the issue, as it can be a trigger, and lead to uneven patches of hyperpigmentation.
ENVIRON'S Skin Essentia range features moisturisers which contain vitamins A, C and antioxidants. Such ingredients can help to reverse skin damage and help brighten the skin. In addition, ENVIRON'S sunscreen called RAD (SPF 15) should be applied daily to help protect the skin.
Issue 3: Premature Aging
There is some evidence to suggest that visible light, including that which comes from your phone can cause inflammation of the skin. This can lead to collagen damage and earlier wrinkling.
ENVIRON'S Intensive Retinol range contain a high concentration of vitamin A and bovine colostrum in a non-greasy formula. This range, which is suitable for those who are acclimatised to concentrations of vitamin A found in the highest concentrations of the Skin Essentia range, is suitable for photo-aged skin, uneven skin or scarring.
So, how often do you clean your phone?
