Six Beauty Tricks That Will Help You to Get Your Skin Selfie Ready

It has been estimated that over 17 million selfies are uploaded to social media platforms such as Facebook or Instagram every week. Let's face it, we now live in a selfie obsessed world. Luckily we can delete any ones that we are unhappy with and then there are numerous photo editing apps that are available to help us look our best. But what about the ones that our friends capture with their phones? Within minutes they can be uploaded and available for everyone to see. This can be enough to fill you with absolute dread. If you want to start looking your best without the help of filters, here are six things that you can do to get your skin selfie ready.

Cleanse Your Skin Effectively

Ensure that your skincare routine includes a "double cleanse". This is particularly important if you have been wearing makeup during the day. The first cleanse involves taking off makeup using products such as eye makeup remover, cleansing oils, pre-cleansers, micellar waters etc. The second cleanse involves a thorough massage of a cleansing gel, cleansing milk or cleansing lotion into the skin and then rinsing with fresh water. Not only will your skin be thoroughly cleansed and subsequent products applied to the skin will perform better, but you will look great in close up shots.

Salicylic acid containing cleansers help to clear pores of impurities and thus minimise their size. Therefore pores don't look enlarged or clogged on any close up shots. To give your skin a glow, exfoliant masks and scrubs can be used to slough off dead cells. They should be used no more than once or twice a week as they can be drying. Stripping the skin of moisture can lead to a break out of spots as the skin tries to over compensate by producing oils. It's better to exfoliate using a chemical exfoliator i.e. one that has glycolic acid, lactic acid or salicylic acid or use an acid based toner straight after cleansing. Ensure that you avoid the eye area.

Moisturise Your Skin

To ensure that your skin has a has a healthy glow in pictures, generous application of the right type of moisturiser for your skin type is needed. Skin types generally fall into one of five categories: normal, oily, dry, combination, or sensitive.

  • Normal skin: General moisturisers are needed to maintain this skin type which tends to be even i.e. non-flaky and non-shiny
  • Oily Skin: Oil free moisturisers which provide some hydration are ideal for this skin type which has large pores and develops a sheen soon after washing
  • Dry Skin: Moisturisers rich in oil are ideal for soothing dry, itchy, tight skin types
  • Combination Skin: A heavier cream is ideal for the cheeks which tend to be drier and a lighter cream for the oilier T zone (nose, forehead and cheeks)
  • Sensitive Skin: Oil free, paraben free, hypoallergenic products are best suited to this type of skin which is prone to acne or irritation

The camera can pick up fine lines and imperfections so ensure that moisturiser is used generously so that skin appears plump and youthful. If your skin appears oily, this will also be picked up on camera. Keep some tissue handy to blot your T zone.

Keep Your Skin Hydrated

Drinking water alone is not enough to maintain healthy hydrated skin that looks great on camera. In addition, you should avoid using soap - use a gentle cleanser instead. Also avoid using skin care products that contain alcohol.

Manage Your Pimples

Just like the appearance of spots, the timing of your next selfie can occur at any time. Use targeted treatments such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid gel to treat the affected area.

Enhance Your Eyes

To ensure that your eyes look brighter and to minimise dark circles and fine lines, an eye cream should be applied. Eye creams should always be applied before your moisturiser to the area around the eye socket using the ring finger. If a moisturiser or serum is applied to the skin first they are absorbed and therefore prevent your eye product being absorbed here too.

Perfect Your Pout

The last thing you want to see in your selfie are dry, cracked lips. Each night, gently brush your lips to reveal fresh healthy skin underneath. Then follow with a moisturising lip balm.

With well cleansed, toned and moisturised skin, your skin will be ready for its' close up.
